How to Break the Scrolling Habit and Show Up With More Intention in Your Business
It starts with good intentions… I have them all the time.. so I wanted to share some tips to break the scrolling habit.
You grab your phone to post something about your offer or check a message from a client. But before you know it, you’ve spent 45 minutes scrolling through reels, comparing yourself to others, and wondering why you still haven’t posted anything yourself. I am becoming the worlds worst at this. It’s making me anxious, less productive and feeding imposter syndrome.
Is it time to break the scrolling habit?
I am on a personal journey to “break up ” my addition with my mobile phone and I am doing so much research around this. I have to say that I am not “as bad” as some I see but all the same.. me and Mr Iphone need to spend less time together!
This isn’t just about losing time—it’s about losing clarity, confidence, and connection with your own voice as a business owner.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
The good news? You can absolutely break up with mindless scrolling and shift into a more focused, intentional way of using social media. One that supports your business, instead of draining it.
Let’s talk about how.
Step 1: Acknowledge the Real Reason You’re Scrolling
Most people don’t scroll just for entertainment—they scroll because they’re unsure about what to post, looking for inspiration, or trying to avoid the pressure of visibility.
This means the problem isn’t just “too much time on your phone.”
It’s a lack of clarity about what to say, how to say it, or how to show up in a way that feels good.
Once you recognise this, you can stop beating yourself up for “wasting time” and start working on the root of the issue: clarity and confidence.
Step 2: Set Clear Boundaries for Social Media Use
One of the simplest and most effective changes you can make is defining when and why you use social media.
Here’s a basic structure you can adapt:
Content creation time: Set aside 60–90 minutes once a week to create and schedule your content
Engagement time: Allocate 10–15 minutes once or twice a day to reply to comments, respond to DMs, and interact with others.. you do NOT need to respond to things instantly.
Off time: Block off evenings, weekends, or specific hours as phone-free zones (yep I am not good at this bit)
You can even use app timers or browser blockers if you need extra support.
These boundaries don’t limit your presence—they protect your energy and focus.
Step 3: Batch Create and Use a Content System
Scrolling often happens when you’re stuck in decision paralysis. You know you need to post, but you don’t know what to say or which image to use.
The solution? Remove the daily decision-making altogether.
Try this simple batching system:
Plan your content: Choose 3–5 topics your audience cares about (e.g., tips, behind-the-scenes, client stories)
Write 4–6 posts per topic in one sitting (just bullet points or rough drafts to start)
Choose your visuals in advance (branded photos, product images, etc.)
Schedule everything using a tool like Later, Meta Business Suite, or Planoly
When you have content ready and scheduled, there’s no need to “hop on and see what’s trending.” You already know what you’re posting and when.
A note on scheduling.. yes of course each app would like you to create content specifically for that.. they would also like you to resize everything correctly and would like you to post directly with the platform.. HOWEVER.. we don’t all have time to do this.. so do what you need to make your life flipping easier.
Step 4: Replace Stock Images With Branded Photography
One of the biggest time drains for small business owners is trying to find the “perfect image” for a post. You search Canva or stock photo sites, but nothing really fits.
Having a library of personal brand images—photos that actually reflect you, your work, and your values—can change everything.
Instead of spending 30 minutes searching for one photo, you can grab a shot from your own image bank and pair it with your content instantly.
My Mini Branding Photoshoots are designed specifically for this reason. In one session, you get a batch of professional, versatile images that save you hours down the line—and make your content feel polished and personal.
Step 5: Create Before You Consume
One simple but powerful mindset shift is this: create before you consume.
Before you open Instagram or Facebook to scroll, ask yourself:
Have I posted my planned content today?
Have I engaged with my audience intentionally?
Do I know why I’m opening this app right now?
Make it a rule that you only scroll after you’ve created or engaged in a way that supports your business.
This keeps your focus on your goals—not on what everyone else is doing.
Step 6: Reflect on the Impact
At the end of the week, take five minutes to check in with yourself:
How much time did I actually spend on social?
Did I post consistently?
How did I feel before and after using the apps?
You might be surprised by how much lighter and more productive you feel just by shifting from passive scrolling to intentional action.
You Don’t Need to Be Everywhere, All the Time
You don’t need to be online 24/7 to grow your business.
You just need to show up consistently, clearly, and confidently—and that comes from having a system and visuals that support you.
Professional photos won’t magically erase all your phone time—but they will make it faster and easier to show up. And that’s what helps you reclaim your time and energy.
If you’re ready to stop scrolling and start showing up with clarity, I’d love to help.
My Mini Branding Photoshoots are perfect for busy small business owners who want to:

Save hours on content creation
Show up professionally without the overwhelm
Let’s create visuals that make marketing feel simpler, faster, and more aligned with your business goals.
